Description

Captain Higuchi, identified specifically as a section commander of the Sixth Division, appears in this portrait print from the Rikkai gunjin kōmyō kagami series with a degree of biographical precision unusual even within the hero-portrait genre. The Sixth Division, based in Kumamoto, saw significant action during the 1894–95 campaign, and Higuchi's rank and unit designation ground the print in documentary specificity. Kiyochika renders the subject in Meiji military dress with careful attention to insignia and decorations, the composition structured to foreground the marks of service rank. His tonal approach to skin and cloth produces a measured realism that distinguishes these portraits from the more stylized actor-print tradition from which the format derives. The series as a whole functioned as popular hagiography, circulating images of meritorious officers to a civilian public engaged with the progress of the war.
