Description
Mukojima, the district along the eastern bank of the Sumida River, was among the most visited cherry blossom destinations in Meiji-era Tokyo, planted densely with Yoshino cherry trees. Kiyochika's treatment of this subject likely emphasizes the blossoms' pale luminosity against a darkening sky, exploiting the tonal contrast that defines his atmospheric style. The composition may situate viewers within or beneath the canopy, looking outward toward the river or its low embankment. This print appears to belong to a numbered series, suggesting it was conceived as one panel among a coordinated sequence of Tokyo landscape views. Gradated bokashi printing creates sky transitions distinctive to Kiyochika's meisho-e work of the 1870s and 1880s.
