Description

A second print from the same series depicting cherry blossoms at Mukojima along the Sumida River, this work likely presents a distinct viewpoint or time of day from its companion. Kiyochika frequently revisited popular meisho-e subjects from multiple angles and lighting conditions, allowing the series format to document seasonal and atmospheric variation. The Mukojima embankment appears in numerous Meiji-era woodblock prints, but Kiyochika's version would be distinguished by its Western-derived tonal modelling and the treatment of light diffusing through petals. Differences in bokashi placement, color palette, or compositional framing may distinguish this state or edition from the prior entry. Both prints together reflect Kiyochika's sustained engagement with Tokyo's enduring landscape sites during the city's rapid transformation.
