Description
Titled explicitly with the kanji for Mukojima (向嶋), this print depicts the famous cherry-tree district on the eastern bank of the Sumida River. Mukojima's Chomeiji temple precinct was celebrated for its densely planted sakura, drawing crowds from across Tokyo each spring. Kiyochika's composition likely sets the blossoming trees against a pale or twilit sky, using graduated bokashi to render the atmospheric luminosity for which he was recognized. Figures, if present, are subordinated to the landscape rather than centered as in traditional bijin-ga or genre scenes. The oban format provides sufficient vertical space to capture both the branching structure overhead and the gathered crowd or water below, a compositional tension common to Kiyochika's meisho-e series work.
