Description

Koganei, in western Tokyo along the Tamagawa aqueduct, was famed for its long avenue of cherry trees, one of the most celebrated hanami destinations outside central Edo. Kiyochika's treatment of this site would characteristically place the blossoming avenue in atmospheric perspective, the canopy of intertwining branches forming an arched tunnel above the water channel or path. His kosen-ga approach here may employ low-angled or diffused light to create gradients across the composition, distinguishing blossom from sky with careful bokashi gradation. Koganei subjects appear across multiple Meiji-era printmakers, but Kiyochika's version emphasizes the sculptural quality of the tree trunks and the tonal range from deep shadow beneath the canopy to bright bloom above.
