Description
A second impression or variant of the 1894 war print depicting a soldier's single-handed opening of the Xuanwu Gate under artillery bombardment during the First Sino-Japanese War. The title, 'Danû o okashite tanshin Genbumon o hiraku,' is identical to the related compositions in the dataset, indicating these may represent different print states, publisher editions, or color variants of the same design. Kiyochika produced his war prints under considerable commercial pressure, and multiple states of popular compositions were common. The composition draws on the musha-e tradition of warrior heroics while incorporating the Western-influenced spatial depth and dramatic lighting that distinguishes Kiyochika's work from earlier ukiyo-e battle scenes.
