Description

A kacho-e (bird-and-flower print) depicting ducks among the withered stalks and seed pods of a lotus plant after the growing season has ended. The pairing of waterfowl with dead or dormant vegetation is rooted in Chinese and Japanese pictorial tradition, where the contrast between animate creatures and spent plant forms evokes seasonal passage. Dead lotus offers distinct visual material: bare vertical stems, hollow spherical seed pods, and curled dried leaves create a spare geometric structure against which the ducks' warm, dark plumage registers. Kiyochika's approach to this subject would have emphasized atmospheric tonal condition over decorative patterning—the subdued light of an overcast late-autumn or winter day, the muted palette of dried plant matter, and the reflective quality of the water surface below. This print is one of multiple recorded impressions or related states of this composition. Kiyochika's treatment of kacho-e subjects contrasts with the bravura decorative handling associated with masters such as Hiroshige or Hokusai, instead inflecting the genre with the atmospheric sensibility that characterized all his mature printmaking.
