Description
A third Kobayashi Kiyochika composition depicting the engagement at Jinzhoucheng near Port Arthur during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95. The presence of three individually titled prints sharing this subject in the record is consistent with the practice of issuing battle scenes as oban triptychs, in which each panel addresses a different aspect of a single engagement — flanking positions, the central assault, or the breakthrough of fortifications — that together produce a panoramic narrative. Alternatively, the prints may represent separate compositions from different moments in the prolonged Liaodong campaign. Kiyochika's technical approach to these war subjects deploys the woodblock medium's graphic capacity for sharp silhouette and saturated color to convey the intensity of close-range infantry combat or siege operations. The Meiji print market for senso-e was substantial during the 1894–95 conflict, and Kiyochika was among its most prolific contributors, producing imagery that shaped popular understanding of battles that most viewers could not witness directly.
