Description

The 観音菩薩 (Kannon bosatsu) is the bodhisattva of compassion, one of the most frequently depicted figures in Japanese Buddhist iconography. Kiyochika's rendering likely presents the figure in the hakue (white-robed) or standing manifestation, against a luminous ground that would allow him to deploy his characteristic light-effect techniques. Unlike genre or landscape work, devotional figures required strict iconographic conventions — the willow branch or vase, the lotus throne, the halo — while still permitting individual treatment of drapery and atmospheric setting. The bokashi gradation around the figure's aureole and the modeling of white robes through grey ink gradations would have been technically demanding printing tasks. This subject situates Kiyochika within a long tradition of Buddhist devotional printmaking.
