Description
This second version of the grapes and pomegranates composition — sharing the same Japanese title ざくろにぶどう — likely represents either a variant color printing, a reformatted edition, or a companion panel from the same publication series as the first. Differences between the two prints may include the ground color, the arrangement of the fruit clusters, or the treatment of the foliage. Kiyochika occasionally produced variant editions of popular botanical subjects for different publishers or markets. In both versions, the technical demands of printing the semi-translucent surfaces of individual grape berries and the leathery rind texture of pomegranates would require careful gradation on separate color blocks, with each layer printed in precise registration on dampened washi.
