Description
A second impression of Kiyochika's Pyongyang battle print, documenting the Japanese victory in the opening land campaign of the First Sino-Japanese War. The Battle of Pyongyang on September 15–16, 1894 resulted in the capture of the city and the flight of Chinese Beiyang Army forces northward toward Manchuria. Kiyochika's composition likely depicts Japanese soldiers advancing through breached walls or engaging Chinese defenders within the city perimeter, with the characteristic smoke and fire elements that define his sensō-e style. The depiction of Korean architectural forms—curved rooflines, fortification walls—gave viewers a sense of geographical specificity, while the dynamic figure compositions drew on both Western-influenced spatial recession and the energetic figure groupings of the ukiyo-e battle print tradition.
