Description
The fifth catalogued sheet from this series completes a sequence of didactic portraits aimed at instilling Meiji values of ambition, perseverance, and public service. Serialized biographical print sets occupied a distinct niche in the late Meiji publishing market, bridging the traditional nishiki-e tradition and the illustrated book and magazine genres that were rapidly supplanting single-sheet prints in popularity. The format allowed Kiyochika to demonstrate narrative and portraiture skills alongside the landscape and battle work for which he is primarily known. Text and image would have been coordinated across the sheet, with the biographical summary reinforcing the moral implicit in the depicted scene. Tonal gradation in the figure and setting would employ the careful bokashi application characteristic of quality oban-format printing.
