Description

This print depicting Horikiri, the iris gardens northeast of central Tokyo, belongs to a meisho-e tradition reaching back to Hiroshige's celebrated views of the same location in his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Horikiri's iris gardens attracted visitors each June when hundreds of cultivated varieties bloomed along the channels of the Ayase River. Kiyochika's treatment of the subject through his atmospheric kosen-ga lens would have transformed the conventional garden view into something richer in tonal nuance — grey-green channel water, filtered afternoon light, iris stalks rendered through precise color registration with multiple purple and violet blocks. The composition likely places viewers at water level among the plantings, framing the blossoms against a graduated sky. As part of a series, the print would have been issued with consistent cartouche design and format, inviting comparison with Kiyochika's reinventions of other Hiroshige subjects.
