Description
Kiyomigata (清見潟) is the scenic coastal inlet near Okitsu in Shizuoka Prefecture, celebrated since the Heian period in poetry and visual art for its views of Mount Fuji across Suruga Bay. Kiyochika's treatment of this meisho-e subject likely depicts the pine-lined shore with Fuji's snow-capped cone rising in the distance, rendered in his characteristic atmospheric manner. The coastal light at Kiyomigata — filtered through sea mist and the canopies of the famous pine grove — gave Kiyochika rich material for his tonal investigations. Unlike his Tokyo kosen-ga prints, which document modernization, Kiyomigata allowed him to engage with a landscape whose classical associations in Japanese culture were firmly established, adapting those associations through his Western-influenced handling of light and atmosphere.
