Description
This print depicts Koshikibu no Naishi, the Heian-period poetess and daughter of Izumi Shikibu, renowned in classical Japanese literature for her quick-witted verse. Kiyochika renders her as a court figure in formal jūnihitoe layered robes, the stacked collar hems rendered with careful attention to textile gradation. His treatment of the figure draws on the bijin-ga tradition while reflecting the Meiji period's renewed interest in classical female literary subjects as emblems of cultural heritage. Subtle bokashi gradations model the background atmosphere. The composition balances the decorative formality of Heian costume with Kiyochika's characteristic restraint, avoiding the elaborate patterning of earlier ukiyo-e bijin in favor of a quieter, more historically grounded representation.
