Description
From Kiyochika's series of Russo-Japanese War satirical prints, this sheet targets Russian General Aleksei Kuropatkin, commander of Russian forces in Manchuria. The scene depicts Kuropatkin interrupted at table by soldiers wounded in battle — a sharp commentary on the disconnect between Russian command and frontline suffering. Kiyochika produced numerous such caricature prints between 1904 and 1905, blending Japanese woodblock technique with Western editorial cartoon conventions absorbed during the Meiji period. The composition exploits exaggerated physiognomy and theatrical gesture to mock Russian military leadership. The [sic] notation in the title reflects the anglicized rendering of the general's name in contemporary Japanese publications. These prints circulated widely as popular journalism.
