Description
A satirical woodblock print targeting Russian General Kuropatkin during the Russo-Japanese War, depicting the commander seeking refuge behind flags or diplomatic symbols as a commentary on Russian duplicity and military failure. The caption — 'your flag does not work, try another' — mocks Russian appeals to neutrality or ceasefire conventions while continuing to suffer battlefield defeats. Kiyochika's wartime caricature series adapted Western political cartoon vocabulary, including exaggerated scale relationships and speech-like captions, for a Japanese woodblock format. Kuropatkin's humiliation at the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army was a recurring subject in this series, and the prints served explicit propagandistic purposes for the domestic Japanese audience during the 1904–1905 conflict.
