This large-format print depicts Lieutenant-General Yamaji Motoharu commanding the Japanese Second Army's amphibious landing on the Jinzhou Peninsula of the Liaodong region during the First Sino-Japanese War, likely in late 1894. Kiyochika organized the composition as a panoramic military scene showing troops wading ashore or disembarking from landing craft, with Yamaji positioned prominently as the commanding figure. Such prints functioned as journalistic documents as well as commemorations, their wide horizontal format accommodating the sprawling activity of a beach landing. The Liaodong Peninsula campaign culminated in the fall of Port Arthur, one of the war's most closely followed engagements. Kiyochika's treatment of battle smoke and coastal light would have drawn on the atmospheric techniques developed in his earlier urban landscapes, here redirected toward martial subjects.
