Description
From the series Mirror of Army and Navy Heroes (Rikkai gunjin kômyô kagami), this print commemorates Lieutenant Mano Ganjirō, identified with torpedo boat operations during the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95. Portrait-hero prints of this type, known as musha-e in the warrior tradition, presented officers in a format that combined formal portraiture with narrative incident. Kiyochika often depicted military subjects against dramatic nocturnal or smoke-filled backgrounds that suited his established skill with tonal contrast. A naval officer associated with torpedo operations would typically be shown either in uniform against a maritime backdrop or in an action composition conveying the speed and danger of night torpedo attacks. The series reflects the intense public demand for war commemoration imagery that characterized print production throughout the conflict.
