Description

The lower embankment at Mimeguri in the Mukojima district ran along the east bank of the Sumida River, an area associated with seasonal leisure—cherry blossoms in spring, moon-viewing in autumn—as well as the Mimeguri Shrine. Kiyochika produced multiple views of this stretch of riverside, exploring it under different light conditions. This version likely captures the embankment in a particular atmospheric state: evening, fog, or the low light of an overcast day. Willows or cherry trees along the bank would provide vertical accents against the horizontal plane of the river, while figures strolling or fishing anchor the scene. The print reflects Kiyochika's sustained interest in Tokyo's riverside neighborhoods during their gradual transformation from traditional leisure districts into modernizing urban zones.
