Description
A third view from Mimeguri in Mukojima completes Kiyochika's serial treatment of this embankment site. With three versions in evidence, this group likely spans different seasons, times of day, or weather conditions, forming a sustained meditation on a single location's changing atmospheric character. The Mukojima district held particular cultural resonance as a traditional pleasure and viewing ground on the unfashionable east bank of the Sumida, away from the main commercial districts. Kiyochika may have been drawn to its relatively undisturbed quality during a period when other parts of Tokyo were undergoing rapid Western-influenced redevelopment. Taken together, the three prints document both a specific place and the range of Kiyochika's atmospheric vocabulary—from misty grays to warmer evening tones—applied systematically to the same subject.
