Description
The waterfront district of Akashichō in Tsukiji — home to Tokyo's foreign settlement and fishing community — is shown on a cold night with the moon riding high. The combination of "chilly night" (kan'ya) and moonlight is precisely calibrated: the moon's light is clear and cold rather than the warm harvest moon of autumn compositions, the water below it dark and still. The Japanese subtitle 築地明石町寒夜之月grounds the image in a specific urban geography that Kiyochika navigated intimately throughout his Tokyo meisho years.
