Description
Ōmori, located along the southern shore of Edo Bay (modern Shinagawa), was historically known for its nori (seaweed) cultivation and shallow tidal flats. A morning seascape at Ōmori would contrast with Kiyochika's nocturnal works by deploying the cool, hazy light of early morning rather than his more characteristic dramatic nocturnal chiaroscuro—the kind of pale, flat luminescence over water that blurs the horizon between sea and sky. The tidal flats at dawn, with their lattice of nori farming poles extending into the shallow water, provided strong geometric incident set against an expansive pale background. The subject had precedents in earlier Edo-period prints but Kiyochika's treatment would have emphasized tonal atmosphere over the anecdotal detail typical of those predecessors, producing a composition closer in sensibility to Western marine painting than to traditional ukiyo-e coastal views.
