Description
Nanao Bay on the Noto Peninsula (Ishikawa Prefecture) is one of the few locations in Japan where shinkirô — atmospheric mirages — occur with sufficient regularity to become a regional phenomenon and subject for artistic representation. The optical effect, in which distant objects appear elevated, doubled, or distorted above the water's surface due to temperature inversion, offered Kiyochika an extraordinary visual subject aligned with his interest in unusual and scientifically grounded atmospheric conditions. The print likely depicts a coastal view of Nanao Bay with the mirage effect shown as hovering forms — phantom town or landscape fragments — suspended above the actual horizon line. The challenge for the woodblock printer was rendering the ghostly, translucent quality of the mirage distinct from the solid forms below while maintaining the compositional coherence of the scene. The Japanese title 能登七尾蜃気楼 specifies both the place and the phenomenon. The 蜃気楼 (shinkirô) character traditionally refers to the sea monster whose exhalations were believed to produce the illusion.
