Description

This print documents the Battle of Pyongyang fought in September 1894 during the First Sino-Japanese War, in which Japanese forces decisively defeated the Qing garrison defending the Korean city. Kiyochika produced an extensive body of war print triptychs documenting both the Sino-Japanese (1894–95) and Russo-Japanese (1904–05) conflicts, establishing him as the period's foremost war print artist. These compositions typically employ the oban triptych format to accommodate the panoramic sweep of battlefield action: smoke-filled background, charging infantry in the foreground, and the chaos of close-quarters combat rendered with dynamic diagonal compositional lines. Kiyochika applied his expertise in atmospheric light effects to battle scenes, using gun smoke and flame to create the same tonal drama he achieved in urban fire prints. The title's direct address — "Our Army" — reflects the nationalist framing of these commercially published triptychs, designed to build public support for Japan's military campaigns.
