Description

A land battle triptych depicting Japanese forces advancing southward in the Korean peninsula during the First Sino-Japanese War, likely toward Seoul or another strategic objective. Kiyochika arranges the composition to show the momentum of the advance: infantry columns moving through landscape, with smoke from skirmishes in the middle distance. The treatment of terrain—hills, roads, and open ground—reflects the influence of Western military illustration on Meiji-era woodblock war prints, as artists adapted to depicting field conditions unfamiliar from the domestic landscape tradition. Figures are shown in Meiji military dress, distinguishing Japanese troops clearly from the Chinese or Korean landscape context. The print belongs to the large body of Sino-Japanese War reportage through which Kiyochika documented the conflict's major engagements for a domestic audience.
