Description

This is among the primary compositions in Kiyochika's series depicting an imperial or aristocratic visit to a military field hospital during the First Sino-Japanese War. Such prints served a dual documentary and ideological function: they presented the imperial institution as personally invested in the welfare of its soldiers, reinforcing the nationalist narrative that sustained public support for the conflict. Kiyochika's composition likely positions the dignitary at center, surrounded by uniformed military physicians and attended soldiers on cots, with the architecture of a temporary or converted hospital structure framing the scene. His approach to group portraiture in this period shows the influence of Western illustration in the rendering of facial expression and the spatial depth of interior scenes, departing from the flatter pictorial conventions of earlier Meiji woodblock prints. The print is executed in nishiki-e polychrome technique with careful registration, and the graduated sky or ceiling tones reflect his practiced use of bokashi to establish atmosphere even in confined indoor settings.
