Description

This second variant in the field hospital visit series presents an alternate compositional treatment of the same ceremonial occasion. Where the other versions in the group may focus on central figures or wide establishing views, this print likely isolates a different grouping of participants — perhaps wounded soldiers receiving attention from the visiting dignitary, or medical staff and orderlies arranged in the middle distance. Kiyochika's war prints from this period show a consistent interest in the human dimension of military conflict rather than purely martial spectacle: the field hospital subject allowed him to depict vulnerability and suffering within the formal conventions of imperial ceremony. The color palette in these hospital interiors tends toward muted khaki and gray-green military tones offset by the white of bandages and bedding, with the dignitary's formal costume providing a chromatic contrast. Printed on washi in standard oban format, this and the other variants were likely sold individually or as a set, appealing to audiences following the war's progress through visual media.
