Description
A kacho-e depicting a rooster and hen together, this print demonstrates Kiyochika's facility outside his celebrated urban and atmospheric landscapes. Bird subjects carried deep associative meaning in Japanese visual culture — the rooster, with its assertive posture and brilliant plumage, embodied martial virtue and punctuality in traditional symbolism. Kiyochika's approach applies Western-influenced shading and volumetric form to the birds' bodies, giving them a naturalistic solidity rarely seen in earlier ukiyo-e kacho-e. The washi ground is likely treated with subtle bokashi gradation to establish an atmospheric setting rather than a neutral void. Printed in polychrome woodblock technique, the piece likely employs multiple keyblocks to achieve the fine texture of comb and wattle. As one of a pair of rooster-and-hen prints attributed to Kiyochika, this work shows the range of his subject matter beyond the kosen-ga light pictures for which he is most widely known.
