Description
Sugawara no Michizane (845–903) was a Heian-era scholar, poet, and statesman who was unjustly exiled and later deified as Tenjin, patron deity of learning and calligraphy. Kiyochika's depiction of this revered figure draws on a long iconographic tradition that associated Michizane with plum blossoms, scholars' robes, and scholarly implements. The composition likely presents the subject in court dress or in the contemplative posture of a poet in exile. Kiyochika's training under Kawanabe Kyōsai in the Kanō tradition gave him facility with figural subjects, and his Michizane prints tend toward restrained elegance rather than the dramatic lighting effects that characterize his urban landscapes.
