Description
Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), depicted here in his twin roles as scholar and poet, was one of the most celebrated figures of Heian literature before his posthumous deification as the kami Tenjin. Kiyochika's treatment emphasizes the literary and intellectual aspects of the subject rather than the vengeful spirit that dominates Tenjin iconography in earlier periods. The composition likely shows Michizane in formal court robes or scholar's attire, possibly with a plum branch—the flower associated with his exile at Dazaifu—as a compositional element. Kiyochika's line-based figural style, drawing on his Kanō training, lends the image a measured formality appropriate to the subject's historical dignity.
