Description
This Sino-Japanese War print depicts Japanese reconnaissance operations near Denshodai, rendered in the subtitle as Denshodai fukin tekijō teisaku no zu. Scouting scenes allowed Kiyochika to explore the tension between visibility and concealment that suited his atmospheric approach: small figures moving through landscape under uncertain light, with the possibility of discovery embedded in the composition. Unlike his direct combat prints with their explosive foreground action, reconnaissance subjects often feature broad landscape settings where the human figures are subordinated to terrain, weather, and the quality of light—fog, dawn, or overcast skies. The series to which this print belongs was among several Kiyochika produced documenting the campaign in Manchuria and the Liaodong Peninsula.
