Description

A night battle scene rendered as a triptych, dominated by a rearing black horse silhouetted against pale pink and cream explosion bursts that light up the dark sky. Soldiers in blue uniforms with red trim struggle and fall in the foreground and right side, some brandishing swords and rifles, while a mounted rider on a brown horse charges in from the right amid smoke and gunfire flashes. The palette is largely dark grey and black offset by the glowing pink-white blasts, giving the whole scene a chaotic, smoke-filled mood; woodblock print, Kobayashi Kiyochika, 1894, "Second Army Bombarding the Enemy Camp at Jinzhoucheng."
