Description
Sergeant Nagai Taizō is depicted in this print from the series Rikkai gunjin kōmyō kagami (Mirror of Army and Navy Heroes), one of several portrait series Kiyochika produced honoring Japanese military figures during and after the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–95). The mirror metaphor in the series title frames these prints as models of martial virtue to be emulated. Nagai is likely shown in Meiji-era military uniform rather than samurai attire, reflecting the print's role as contemporary reportage rather than historical fantasy. Kiyochika's warrior portrait compositions in this period typically feature a centrally placed bust or three-quarter figure against a plain or lightly decorated ground, with cartouches giving the series name, the subject's rank and name, and the artist's seal.
