Description
A companion or series variant to Kiyochika's 'Sunset at Yanagishima,' this print depicts the Yanagishima district — home to the Myoken Bosatsu temple at Honjo — at dusk from a particular vantage. Yanagishima's marshy, canal-laced landscape offered Kiyochika expansive low horizons suited to his sunset compositions. The setting sun would have been printed using warm gradations of orange, red, and yellow achieved through multiple bokashi passes, with canal water or rice paddies below reflecting the colored sky. The contrast between the luminous western horizon and the silhouetted temple buildings or willow trees (yanagi) that give the district its name is a likely compositional device.
