Description
This print depicts Taira no Tadanori (1144–1184), the warrior-poet of the Genpei War celebrated in the Heike Monogatari for his refinement as a poet and his death at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. Tadanori is a figure of particular literary resonance; a poem he composed was posthumously included in the imperially commissioned Senzaishu anthology, attributed anonymously because of his enemy status. Kiyochika's treatment likely shows the warrior in full armor, possibly mid-battle or in a moment of contemplative stillness, using dramatic lighting to distinguish him from background elements. The tension between martial force and cultural refinement inherent to the Tadanori story offered Kiyochika opportunity to balance the dynamism of armor and weaponry against quieter psychological suggestion — a balance his Western-influenced tonal modeling was particularly suited to achieve.
