Description
The first in Kiyochika's series commemorating the Japanese Army's Taiwan operations, this 1894-dated print initiates a group of compositions documenting the military annexation of Taiwan that followed Japan's victory in the First Sino-Japanese War. As an inaugurating image in the sequence, it likely presents the most emblematic subject—possibly a landing or initial engagement—establishing the compositional and narrative conventions the subsequent prints would follow. Kiyochika's war prints of this period demonstrate his mature command of the sensō-e format: dynamic foreground figures rendered with momentum and physical force, atmospheric backgrounds compressed by smoke and haze, and the strategic deployment of light and shadow to direct the viewer's attention. The series reflects the Meiji government's interest in projecting military capability to both domestic and international audiences through the accessible, widely distributed woodblock print medium.
