Description

Produced during or shortly after the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05), this print depicts Tsar Nicholas II witnessing the return of defeated Russian forces — a subject that would have carried triumphalist resonance for a Japanese domestic audience. Kiyochika contributed extensively to war print production during both the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War, supplying single-sheet and triptych nishiki-e documenting battles, troop movements, and the humiliation of enemy commanders. This composition focuses on the adversary's perspective, a device that heightened Japanese victory by showing Russian loss through Russian eyes. The figure of the Tsar, rendered in Western costume against a backdrop of retreating soldiers, draws on newspaper and photographic sources that circulated during the conflict. Kiyochika's characteristic light effects — here likely cold, overcast tones — underscore the scene's defeated mood.
