Description

This print depicts Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (1646–1709), the fifth shogun of the Edo period, known historically for his controversial Edicts on Compassion for Living Things (Shorui Awaremi no Rei) and for the cultural patronage that earned his era the designation Genroku. Kiyochika produced historical portrait prints alongside his better-known urban landscape work, and this composition likely presents Tsunayoshi in formal court dress or armor appropriate to his status. The print may belong to a series depicting Tokugawa shoguns or notable historical figures. Kiyochika's approach to historical portraiture drew on both the established yakusha-e and musha-e traditions and on Western graphic conventions introduced through illustrated newspapers and Meiji-era publishing, resulting in a hybrid pictorial language suited to the period's appetite for historical narrative.
