Description

The jinrikisha (rickshaw), introduced to Japan around 1869, became one of the most visible symbols of Meiji modernization and quickly supplanted the palanquin as the primary means of passenger transport in Tokyo. Kiyochika here captures the kinetic energy of the vehicle in motion, likely employing diagonal compositional lines and selective blurring of detail to convey speed—a pictorial problem to which the woodblock medium is not naturally suited and which required formal invention. The runner's posture, the tilt of the carriage, and the trajectory of the vehicle across the picture plane are the compositional anchors. The setting is probably an urban street, possibly at night or dusk given Kiyochika's preference for atmospheric lighting conditions. The subject matter aligns with his broader project of documenting the material novelties of Meiji urban life.
