The Tokyo Shin-Ōhashi bridge in rain — 新大橋雨中図 — depicts one of the Sumida River's great crossings, the New Great Bridge (completed 1693) south of Eitaibashi, under a downpour. Shin-Ōhashi was among the most compositionally dramatic of Tokyo's bridges — its long wooden span visible for great distances — and Kiyochika's rain treatment adds the diagonal energy of precipitation to the horizontal sweep of the bridge architecture. The bridge and the rain were each among his most productive subjects; combined, they produce one of his most characteristic compositions.
