Description
This print demonstrates Kiyochika's treatment of night sky as a complex field rather than a uniform dark background. His nocturnal compositions often include variations in sky tone — the diffuse glow near the horizon above a lit city, the deeper darkness of the zenith, the haze around a full moon — that transform the upper portion of the composition from a neutral backdrop into an active element. Achieving this required the printer to apply multiple ink passes to the sky area, using [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) technique to grade between tones while maintaining the overall sense of a continuous surface. The [washi](/glossary/washi) surface, dampened before printing, allowed the ink layers to blend at their edges rather than printing as sharp, distinct strata.
