Description
The final print in this group of untitled Kiyochika works, classified under abstract subjects, reflects the breadth and variety of his career output. Kiyochika's reputation rests primarily on the kosen-ga light pictures produced between 1876 and 1881, but his subsequent career included war prints, political satire, theatrical imagery, and works for illustrated publications that have received less sustained critical attention. Abstract prints within his catalogued output may originate from any phase of this long career, carrying the formal and technical signature of the woodblock medium—washi support, carved keyblock lines, graduated color blocks, manual bokashi application—while resisting easy placement within the named series that define his documented legacy.
