Description
Without a title or clear subject identification, this woodblock print can be situated within Kiyochika's practice through attention to its technical construction rather than its imagery. His kosen-ga prints depend on a particular calibration between block carving and ink application: passages intended to read as luminous required the carver to leave [washi](/glossary/washi) surface exposed while surrounding areas were built up with multiple pigment layers. The resulting contrast, heightened by the slight sheen of mineral pigments against matte washi, produced his characteristic light-source effects. In this untitled work, such techniques may operate in a more self-contained register, without the anchoring presence of a bridge, canal, or illuminated storefront to specify the light's occasion or geography.
