Description
Attributed to Kiyochika and classified as abstract, this untitled woodblock print occupies the intersection of two tendencies in his work: the atmospheric and the formally experimental. His prints of nocturnal Tokyo frequently approached abstraction through the suppression of descriptive detail in shadow zones, where only a silhouetted roofline or a reflected lamp on water would indicate the scene's physical setting. Works that carry no title and no subject designation may represent extensions of this atmospheric logic to its endpoint, where the gradated ink field is the composition's primary content. The [washi](/glossary/washi) support, typically a [gampi](/glossary/gampi) or [kozo](/glossary/kozo) sheet chosen for its absorbency and dimensional stability under repeated dampening, plays a constitutive role in these tonal effects.
