Description
The final work in this sequence of untitled abstract prints attributed to Kiyochika, this woodblock composition carries none of the documentary evidence—publisher seals, series titles, date cartouches—that would situate it within his known production chronology. His prints from the 1877–1882 period of greatest activity typically bore the Matsuki Heikichi publisher's seal and were issued in numbered series; later works reflect different commercial relationships and production contexts. The absence of such marks on abstract works makes attribution and dating difficult, though stylistic analysis of pigment choices, block carving quality, and compositional conventions associated with his kosen-ga approach can support tentative placement within his career. The [washi](/glossary/washi) surface, the behavior of ink at printed edges, and the range of colors available through the pigment mixtures used all carry period-specific information that complements any formal reading of the composition.
