Description
Atmospheric effects such as mist, fog, and rain feature prominently in Kiyochika's representational prints, and this untitled abstract work likely applies the same formal strategies in a non-representational register. Mist and fog effects in woodblock printing rely on [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation and the strategic use of pale, low-saturation pigments—diluted grays, greens, or blues—applied across a broadly inked ground. In abstract prints of this character, tonal masses appear to dissolve at their edges rather than resolving into defined forms, producing a compositional quality of sustained ambiguity. The dampened [washi](/glossary/washi) surface enhances this effect by allowing ink to spread slightly beyond the carved block boundaries, softening contours that would otherwise register more sharply.
