This untitled Kiyochika woodblock print, listed under abstract subjects, may belong to a sub-series or album of compositional studies. Kiyochika was a prolific artist whose work appeared in series, single-sheet prints, and illustrated publications throughout the Meiji period. Prints classified as abstract within his output often share a reduced pictorial vocabulary: large areas of flat or modulated tone, minimal figuration, and a compositional logic derived from the behavior of light rather than from the representation of identifiable objects or places.
