Description
This untitled Kiyochika woodblock print, listed under abstract subjects, may belong to a sub-series or album of compositional studies. Kiyochika was a prolific artist whose work appeared in series, single-sheet prints, and illustrated publications throughout the Meiji period. Prints classified as abstract within his output often share a reduced pictorial vocabulary: large areas of flat or modulated tone, minimal figuration, and a compositional logic derived from the behavior of light rather than from the representation of identifiable objects or places. Bokashi gradation—applied by hand to each impression—ensures that no two prints in such a series are tonally identical, giving each sheet an individual character.
