Description
An untitled print attributed to Kobayashi Kiyochika, classified under abstract subjects. The multiple-block woodblock process used throughout Kiyochika's career involved careful registration of keyblock and color blocks, with bokashi gradation applied manually to individual sheets during printing. In abstract compositions, this technical process becomes more visible as subject: the rhythm of block registration, the soft edges of gradated ink, and the texture of the washi surface are foregrounded rather than subordinated to recognizable imagery. Such a print offers a view into the physical mechanics of meiji-period nishiki-e production as much as into Kiyochika's compositional thinking.
