Description
This untitled Kiyochika woodblock print, classified under abstract subjects, may belong to a late phase of his career when his output became more varied and less focused on the systematic documentation of Tokyo. After the Russo-Japanese War prints of 1904–1905, Kiyochika's production declined and his graphic style shifted. Abstract or categorically ambiguous prints from this period may reflect a loosening of the pictorial discipline that characterized his kosen-ga work, or an engagement with decorative and illustrative formats not fully represented in major museum collections. The print retains the washi support and woodblock technique consistent with his full career output.
